Nakamura Tokichi Honten began when Tokichi Nakamura, the eldest son of Rokubei Konakamura, a master thatcher at the Ise Shrine, set up a shop banner with a cross-like symbol 
on New Year's Day, 1859 in Uji, Kyoto. Since then, from generation to generation for 150 years, our mission has been to provide truly delicious and rich Japanese tea with sincerity.
Uji tea has become the quintessential Japanese tea. It has a long history and is the result of our predecessors' wisdom, effort and wish to provide the moment of relief in a sip of tea. Nakamura Tokichi Honten continues to transmit this spirit, and the culture and tradition of tea to the next generation, while proposing a range of ways of enjoying tea adapted to the lifestyles of the time.
Therefore, in addition to the delicious taste of our tea, we wish to offer the customer the heartwarming moments and relaxation that only a tea can provide. Sparing no effort, we will keep matching tradition with innovation.
The black pine "Horai Funamatsu", covering the courtyard is over 200 years old. The second generation Tokichi planted it with the wish for his household's lasting prosperity. Including the branches, it is 6 metres high and 12 metres long. Shaped like a sailing boat, and seeming to travel through the space of time with mainsail fully hoisted, it is Uji's finest tree.
The cafe that opened in June, 2001 was constructed using the same structure as a Meiji-Taisho era tea manufacturing factory, including its solid beams, pillars, and frame. With a spacious 8-metre high hall, the windows situated high up the hipped ceiling let in soft rays of sunlight. Come and treat yourself to the blend of delicious tea, matcha sweets, and the history of Nakamura Tokichi Honten.
