Here in Uji, since our establishment in 1859 in the Edo era, we've engaged in selling ‘Japanese tea'. We will continue to serve ‘Japanese tea' as we distinguish what to change, and what not to change, so that ‘Japanese tea' will continue to be demanded by future generations.

is the calligraphy offered to the first generation Tokichi Nakamura by the venerable Kaishu Katsu, a famous political figure of the Edo period, during his visit to Fushimi, Kyoto. In honour of their re-acquaintance, Katsu chose these words which mean "from generation to generation, strive on in the business of tea in this land of Uji, so that the smell of Uji tea may never be extinguished".
True to this motto, we secure this continuity by what we believe to be the best way: respecting and optimizing the essential qualities of each type of Japanese tea.

For sencha, we mean tea leaves grown with plenty of exposure to the sun that offer a pleasant cooling sensation. For gyokuro ( like jade colour tea ), we mean tea leaves grown completely in the shade that offer deep sweetness and a rich aroma. We mean the taste of each tea that we ourselves can drink and appreciate beyond their looks and colour .
Considering that tea is something to drink and not just to contemplate, we carefully select the tea we serve, in pursuit of the essential qualities of each and every one of them.
